12 jazz standards, direct-to-disc

oFF tHE tOP: standards 1 is guitarist Frank Singer's debut solo album. Recorded directly to CDRW, this Album is live, in the sense that the performances are true, beginning-to-end cuts with no overdubs or "fixes". Frank plays with a steady time and a deep sense of traditional jazz guitar. The concept of the album is essentially a set of standards as they would be played in performance.

oFF tHE tOP: standards 1, 12 tracks of music, will easily bear multiple listenings.

liner notes

Solo jazz guitar.

Scary.

There's no cheating, no taking breaks during other solos, just you and the tune. It's a cross between lovemaking and wrestling, with no one to blame but yourself when you lose the match. Just when you think you're safe, the bridge comes around, and you're lost again.

I first began playing solo in restaurants and hotels. Then in places where people might actually pay attention to what I was doing. When they know the tune, that's when you know you're in trouble.

Actually, that's when they know you're in trouble.

Really, that's all part of the fun. To honor the tune and yet leave it wide open to anything; this is the key. Then, anything can happen. That's the good part of why you get into trouble. I guess that means that taking the risk is the same as having the adventure.

Music is a bit like life.

Scary.

But fun.
